'Lucas' is a 15 year old 15.1 hh Azteca gelding, who was formerly a polo pony for Gabriel Mercado in Lakeside. Gabriel bought Lucas from a ranch in Ensenada, Mexico, where he had been used as a cow horse.  After Gabriel bought Lucas, he kept him at the Caliente Club in Tijuana for about a year, where he played arena polo.  Gabriel won a lot of tournaments in Caliente with him.  When the club closed, Lucas came to Lakeside, CA with Gabriel.  Gabriel played Lucas in a couple of chukkers in a 4 goal tournement in Rancho Santa Fe in 2007.

In early 2008, Gabriel donated Lucas to Russ Sheldon for use in Poway polos' interscholastic polo program. Russ had enough polo ponies and thought Lucas might do well as a jousting horse, so Lucas is feed leased to WorldJoust Tournaments for the next 3 years, until he can be sold to us.

Lucas took to jousting immediately and is completely unphased by armour, weapons and the tilt. He figured his job out in less than 6 passes, and runs straight and true like he's on rails.



Lucas performed fantastically for competitor Graham Nixon at the 2008 event, and is turning into a dependable and eager schooling horse.



Lucas is accustomed to being one of a string of horses and was distant at first. He's a clever horse and soon discovered he liked human interaction as much as he likes jousting. He's turned into quite a cuddle bug who loves to be scratched and cooed over. He doesn't like apples, but horse treats and carrots are very welcome!!
